That Wasn't So Bad

The last couple weeks have been pretty busy...starting a new job, short spring break trip, and now work travel.  But I have to say it has been great.  The first week at the new job went fairly smoothly, all things considered.  I've met a lot of new people and been  re-acquainted with several others.  It is amazing how small of a community the Indianapolis "tech sales" market is.

The family went on a short spring break trip as well to Great Wolf Lodge in Cincinnati.  The boys had an absolute blast.   They wore themselves (and me) out, but we had a lot of fun.

Training for the mini is progressing as well and I am hitting the peak of my training miles over the next couple of weeks.  Hopefully the weather continues to cooperate because I can't take any more treadmill time this year.

Anyway, I have to say that change hasn't been that bad!

Welcome

Welcome to my new blog!  I hope to be able to share information on a wide variety of topics...running, work, technology, social media and more.

Change

Change is a topic that has been running through my head quite a bit recently and for good reason.  One of the biggest changes that we can face as adults (outside of family) is a change in our jobs.  Having only made a couple of transitions in my career, I can tell you that it is never an easy thing to do.  But, even when things are good, sometimes a change is necessary.  Having made the decision to leave a great, vibrant, growing company is not an easy one, but for my career and family, it is a change that I am getting ready to make.  Next week I am going to be starting a new position with Cisco managing a portion of their services business in the central region.  This new role will be a huge step for me in regards to my level of responsibility and accountability.

After spending numerous hours debating and evaluating the opportunity, I started thinking about what my final decision making criteria should be.  So, I wanted to share my thought process for any of you who may be facing the same dilemma.

1) Trust Your Gut - Not Your Emotions
- Don't deliberate when you are angry or stressed out about your current job as it could skew your thinking.  Dig deeper than that and understand is there something really missing in your current role?

2) Professional Mentors
- We all should have at least 1 or 2 professional mentors that you can bounce the opportunity off of an try to shoot holes in it.  If you can't confidently answer why you are making the change, then you aren't ready.

3) Facts
- It is easy to get caught up in hype..."things will get better", "we are going to implement x,y, and z", "we are going to make you a VP in 6 months", etc..  Separate fact from fiction and look at the situation realistically.

At the end of the day you have to decide what is best for you both professionally and personally.  Even after you make your decision, the change won't be easy, but at least you'll know you put the right level of thought and effort into the process.
